Ilkley Cycling Club Avantigas 2 day race

2nd May 2014

Ilkley Cycling Club, the largest cycle club in the UK, is holding its first ever 2 day race. The ICC AvantiGas 2 day race takes place on Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th May 2014.

Entries have come in from across the country, and 25 three-man teams have been selected. They will contest three stages - stages 1 and 2 on Saturday, and stage 3 on Sunday.

Stage 1, at 10am on Saturday morning, is a 50 mile road race starting at Beckwithshaw Village Hall (which is that day's HQ). It involves four and a half laps of the Penny Pot circuit, with the finish on the summit of Bland Hill. (Hedgehog Cycling has suggested a separate cycle lane for this area, which we refer to as the Penny Pot Lane loop).

Stage 2, at 3pm on Saturday afternoon, is a four and a half mile point to point team time trial from Beckwithshaw over Bland Hill to Norwood Edge.

Stage 3, on Sunday morning, is a 45 mile road race around a hilly Dacre and Darley circuit. The riders will do nearly 7 laps, and there's a flat sprint finish.

Harrogate News quotes Stephanie Millward, Chair of Ilkley Cycling Club: 'As the largest cycling club in the UK we wanted to create an event that would encourage cyclists to come to Yorkshire ahead of the Grand Depart and help build local excitement in the run up to the Tour de France.'

'We anticipate the race being a huge success and hope it will become an annual event that cyclists see as a challenging and competitive race to start the summer season each year.'
