Ride London 2014 women's criterium report

9th August 2014

The Mall, London

The women's criterium race took place in glorious sunshine this evening on a short circuit around St James's Park - on The Mall, Spur Road, Birdcage Walk, and Horse Guards Road.

There were a number of attacks off the front of the peloton, but it proved difficult to get away. Emilia Fahlin of Wiggle Honda was chased down by Marianne Vos.

Amy Roberts got a small gap with three laps to go, but she was reeled in, then Fahlin made another effort. Emily Collins tried to make a break at the end of the penultimate lap, and Amy Roberts got a gap on the last lap.

Roberts was overhauled on the last ride down The Mall. In the sprint, Marianne Vos hit the front, but Georgina Bronzini of Wiggle Honda surged past her just before the line to take the win. Vos was second, and Lizzie Armitstead third.

Vos only had one team mate, whereas Wiggle Honda had a much bigger team. Wiggle's tactic seemed to be to make a succession of breaks, and force Vos to chase them down, and perhaps tire Vos out. It seemed to work.
