British National Championships 2014 road races

29th June 2014

Peter Kennaugh won the British Cycling National Road championships road race in Abergavenny today, beating Team Sky colleague Ben Swift in a sprint.

British Cycling has this quote from Peter Kennaugh: 'It's an amazing feeling. On the last lap it was hard to race against such a good mate. He sat on for most of the last lap, and I thought it was game over. But I knew the last 200m was dowhill and I thought I had a chance. I couldn't believe I won it.'

'I've done so many training sprints with Swifty and he leaves me behind every time, but today was my day.'

Simon Yates of Orica Green Edge was third.

The women's event was won by Laura Trott, with her Wiggle honda teammate Dani King in second place.

Lizzie Armitstead finished third after a typically aggressive ride. She instigated a break of eight riders, then made a solo attack with two laps to go, according to British Cycling, building a 17 second lead at one stage. However, King and Trott chased her down, to make it a sprint finish.

Armitstead said, 'I'm disappointed. I had my normal issue of wanting to take the race on, so on every incline I gave it a go. I didn't want to make it a sprint; for me, that was more of a risk than going solo.'
