That&#8217;s according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/cycling-index-england\/cycling-index-england\">provisional figures published by the DfT<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cycling is still up by 13.8% against a baseline from December 2013. The peak in cycling traffic came during the pandemic in March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new statistics come from 160 Automatic Traffic Counters, which provide a nationally representative sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Road Traffic Estimates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The DfT also published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/provisional-road-traffic-estimates-great-britain-july-2022-to-june-2023\/provisional-road-traffic-estimates-great-britain-july-2022-to-june-2023\">provisional road traffic estimates for the year to June 2023<\/a>. These figures show that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a total of 328 billion vehicle miles were driven during the year to June 2023<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>that represents a 2.3% increase since June 2022<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>vehicle miles driven are still 3.1% below the pre-pandemic level (December 2019)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly-published DfT figures should not be confused with the <a href=\"https:\/\/hedgehogcycling.co.uk\/wp\/2023\/08\/31\/majority-of-car-trips-are-for-leisure-or-shopping\/\">National Travel Survey statistics<\/a>, which cover a period to the end of 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cycling Down 5.2% in Year to June 2023 Cycling traffic in England was down by 5.2% in the year to June 2023.
