As part of his mission, he intends to appoint an Active Travel Commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He wants to develop healthy and thriving communities, which includes the following elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a healthy and resilient region<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a region that&#8217;s connected to opportunity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>warm and affordable homes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a region where people are connected to the outdoors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>safe places for all in York and North Yorkshire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainable Transport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable transport falls under the &#8216;connected to opportunity&#8217; element. The detailed explanation on the Combined Authority website is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;David Skaith plans to create an affordable, reliable and sustainable transport system that works for York and North Yorkshire, one that puts passengers first and reduces dependency on the car&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/yorknorthyorks-ca.gov.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Mayoral-Mission-and-Priorities-Nov-24.pdf\">Mayoral Mission and Priorities statement adds<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;Improving our transport system is fundamental to ensuring people are connected to work, leisure, family, and important appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current system is not working for people. In our urban areas buses are trapped in congested streets and in rural areas residents are stranded by irregular services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll create a transport system that works for York and North Yorkshire, one that puts passengers first and reduces dependency on the car&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Active Travel Commissioner<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mission and Priorities statement includes a commitment to appoint a York &amp; North Yorkshire Active Travel Commissioner. The Combined Authority says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;The Mayor will deliver progress on active travel schemes across our region, appointing an Active Travel Commissioner to champion walking, cycling and wheeling&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes after the Mayor met England&#8217;s Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman, <a href=\"https:\/\/yorknorthyorks-ca.gov.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/241002-YNYCA-Document-Pack.pdf\">as reported in his 6th September 2024 update<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sports and the Outdoors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8216;connected to the outdoors&#8217; element is described as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;Keeping active and spending time outdoors improves physical and mental health. With this in mind, David Skaith wants to make open spaces safe, affordable and accessible to everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&#8217;ll champion our landscapes and look to increase engagement in the outdoors from our urban schools and environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&#8217;s also working to assemble sporting bodies and teams to broaden access to sport&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This element could and should include cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Police Priorities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Mayor Jo Coles is responsible for the police and fire services in North Yorkshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northyorkshire-pfcc.gov.uk\/how-can-we-help\/your-say\/yourpoliceandfire\/\">A consultation on priorities runs until 10am on 18th November 2024<\/a>. There&#8217;s an opportunity to complete the survey and, for example, request greater policing of dangerous driving on the streets of North Yorkshire towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Hubs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mayor has made a contribution of \u00a3760,000 to the North Yorkshire Community Buildings Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is to renovate village halls or sports facilities and put on more activities and events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YNY Mayor to Appoint an Active Travel Commissioner Mayor of York &amp; North Yorkshire David Skaith has set out his Vision and Priorities for the region, six months after taking office.
