The City of York Council has official information about cycling in York.

It includes contact details for the council's Walking and Cycling Officer, a map of bike routes, and leaflets for eight short leisure rides.

There's also information about cycle training available through the council, and about the E-Cycle Switch scheme that offers residents a free week-long e-bike trial, and money off the purchase price.

York Cycle Campaign is a volunteer-run community group that aims to be the voice for all cyclists in York. You can sign up as a member or a corporate supporter.

Their goal is for more locals and visitors to choose cycling as the most obvious and sensible way of traversing the city. The Campaign wants cycling in York to be safe, convenient, and accessible to all.

York to Beningbrough Cycle Route

There's a brilliant cycle route from the centre of York to Beningbrough, partly on a tarmacked path by the river Ouse, and partly on quiet roads.

It ends up at Beningbrough Hall, an C18th National Trust property (where cyclists are entitled to a free cup of tea).

York to Selby Cycle Route

This is a great ride from York to Selby and back, largely off-road.

It uses the trackbed of the old York and Doncaster Branch railway line. It features Cycle the Solar System, with scale models of the planets, the correct distance (proportionally) from the Sun and each other along the path.

York, Selby and Church Fenton Road Bike Ride

This is a 48-mile road bike ride in the flatlands south of York.

It takes the Solar System Greenway to Selby, then continues south to Temple Hirst on the river Aire.

Birkin Fisheries Café is a good place for a cake stop, then flat roads lead via Church Fenton to Cawood on the river Wharfe. Rejoin the Solar System Greenway to get back to York.

A fairly short drive from York, Sutton Bank offers some really exciting mountain biking options.

The different trails are rated green, blue, and red, so there's something for all ages and levels. There's also a cyclocross/all-weather cycle track through the Hambleton Plantation, with a pump track part way round.

I joined a cycling tour of York, and found it was an excellent way to explore the city.

It's really a history tour, much like walking tours of York, but it's a more relaxing and enjoyable way of getting between the sights, and adds and extra element of fun.
