Froome wins Dauphiné Stage 5

10th June 2016

Chris Froome of Team Sky won Stage 5 of the Criterium du Dauphiné as the race moved into the mountains with a summit finish in Vaujany.

According to CyclingNews, Mikel Landa of Team Sky went off the front of the bunch on the final climb. Dan Martin attacked with 3km to go, and Contador, Porte, and Sergio Henao went with him. Froome caught them up, then launched his own attack 2.5km from the finish. Porte followed Froome, and they both went past Landa. Froome won the stage by 1 second from Porte; Adam Yates was third, 19 seconds back, in the same time as Dan Martin; Contador was fifth at 21 seconds, and Romain Bardet sixth at 25 seconds.

Froome said, 'It's an amazing feeling. It's always good to win a race before the Tour de France. The team rode very well to take me to the final climb in the best position. They set it up perfectly for me. I didn't expect to gain time on Alberto Contador.'
