Tom Dumoulin ready for World Champs ITT

22nd September 2015

Tom Dumoulin

Tom Dumoulin is ready for the individual time trial at the World Championships in Richmond, Virginia tomorrow, and is the favourite to win. 2014 champion Bradley Wiggins is not defending his title, and Fabian Cancellara is out through injury. Tony Martin is participating, and although recovering from illness, is likely to be a strong contender. Rohan Dennis, winner of Stage 1 of the Tour de France, is also in the running for the title.

Sunday's team time trial was Dumoulin's first competitive outing since the Vuelta a Espana. He did a lot of work at the front for his Giant Alpecin team, and they finished fifth, 1min04s behind winners BMC. Tony Martin's Etixx-QuickStep team were second.

Dumoulin told NOS, 'I'm still a bit tired from the Vuelta, so I couldn't do such long turns as last year. But our team was at a higher level than last year. I think it was a good performance.'

Dumoulin still has slight doubts over his form. 'I haven't felt really terrible since the Vuelta. It was only on the last days of the Vuelta that I was bad.' But once he got to Richmond, he felt tired again. 'That's why...during the reconnaissance of the team time trial course, I got into the car after twenty minutes.' He is looking to rest as much as possible, as he's not only doing the ITT on Wednesday, but also the road race on Sunday, where he'll be one of the protected riders, although Nikki Terpstra is the leader.

Dumoulin's Vuelta a Espana 2015

Dumoulin had an outstanding Vuelta a Espana 2015, winning the time trial on Stage 17, to move back into the overall race lead. He eventually cracked on Stage 20, and finished the race sixth overall, 3min46 behind winner Fabio Aru. Nevertheless, it was a breakthrough Tour for him, and showed his potential.

The individual time trial remains his speciality, though, as he will hope to show tomorrow.
