Tom Dumoulin yesterday won the individual time trial at the World Championships in Bergen, Norway.
The Dutchman's time of 44 minutes 41 seconds was 57s better than silver medallist Primoz Roglic (Slovenia), and 1min21 ahead of Chris Froome in bronze.
Dumoulin said, 'I thought my power meter was off because it was so high. I felt really, really good. It started raining and I needed to take the corners really slow, especially in the first kilometre of the climb with all the twists and turns - on every corner my back wheel was slipping as I had the TT tyres on because I thought it was going to be dry.'

Tom Dumoulin won the silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympic individual time trial. Fabian Cancellara took gold, in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes 15 seconds, with Dumoulin 47s slower, and Chris Froome third, 1 minute 02 seconds behind the Swiss winner.
The Olympic time trial was Dumoulin's main focus this season, but his preparation was disrupted when he broke a bone his wrist during the Tour de France. Partly due to that injury, he abandoned the Olympic road race after just 12km.
After winning silver, Dumoulin told NOS that he had mixed feelings about it. 'Everyone says I should be proud of it, and I am. But for the moment, the overriding feeling is disappointment. When I see Cancellara with the gold medal hanging around his neck, yes, that's what I wanted.'
'I couldn't have gone 47 seconds faster, certainly not today. I may have made some mistakes, but I was also a bit careful on the first lap, because I didn't want to put too much pressure on my wrist in training. I had to get used to it [the course]. But I wasn't in pain, I used painkillers.'
'I'm very happy that it's all over. The last two and a half weeks were really not easy. But I've seen that I'm pretty good at handling the stress in a situation like this.'

Tom Dumoulin will ride the individual time trial, and perhaps the road race, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. When he abandoned the Tour de France 2016 on Stage 19, it seemed that his participation in the Games was in doubt, but it was a clean wrist break which is healing well, and he could be pain-free and able to ride without a brace in Rio. Tom Dumoulin was voted cyclist of the year in the Netherlands, according to NOS.nl. He won the Gerrit Schulte trophy for the second year running, largely thanks to his performance in the Vuelta a Espana. He also won a time trial in the Tour of the Basque country, and two stages of the Tour of Switzerland, where he was third overall.
Dumoulin said the he deserved to win the prize. He felt that his best moment was the uphill stage win in Spain when he beat Chris Froome. 'I think back to that quite often. I'm certainly going to go back to that place where I won that race when we're in the area in December for a training camp.'

Vasil Kiryienka of Team Sky and Belarus is the time trial world champion, completing the 53.5km course in 1h 02min 29.45s on Wednesday, 9s ahead of Adriano Malori of Italy, and 27s faster than third-placed Jerome Coppel of France. Jonathan Castroviejo of Spain was fourth, and Dumoulin could only manage fifth, 1min 02s behind the winner. He was one place ahead of Rohan Dennis, who was in turn one ahead of Tony Martin.
NOS reports that Dumoulin had an injury to his buttock, which hindered him. He said, 'I can be proud of nevertheless coming fifth. But I didn't enjoy any moment of it. It was a strange time trial. For me, it went well at times, then badly again. Mentally, it was the hardest ride of my life.'
In a further interview reported today, Dumoulin said that he had realised in the days before the time trial that his preparation hadn't been good, and he didn't feel in good form, to the extent that he was worried about setting off a minute and a half in front of Tony Martin. 'This was really not a course for me, with awful long, straight roads. But it was a course for Tony Martin. I was even worried in case he caught me up. I thought: I'm surely not going to let that happen. But it didn't.'
Dumoulin said that his preparation in 2014 had been better, doing the Eneco Tour, and Canadian World Tour races before the World Championships, but the Vuelta can also be the right choice - 'maybe just not the way I rode it.'
For 2016, his programme isn't yet decided, but one thing is certain: the Olympic time trial in Rio is the main objective. 'That course is made for me.'
