Reader review
Bike Rides In and Around York begins with a City Tour of York by bike, taking in the most famous sights, and recounting the fascinating stories behind them. Then there are wonderful family, road, and mountain bike rides.
The family bike rides stay on traffic-free paths where possible, and are as much about exploring the area as they are about cycling. I always include suggestions on where to get ice cream or tea and cakes.
The road bike rides are suitable for cycling as a sport, but there's lots of information about the countryside you ride through and points of interest along the way. The road rides range from 20 to 101 miles.
There are two mountain bike rides starting and finishing in York itself. The others are a short hop away from York, in nice places like Yearsley Moor and Sutton Bank.
'The guide for York rides is so interesting, well laid out, great photos, facts and tips'.
Reader review, 22nd July 2021
Each ride begins with a Trip Overview, featuring distance, difficulty, duration, hills and stops.
There's an overview map of each ride in the book, plus a link to more resources on this website which include:
There are feature boxes for each ride.
Blue boxes contain information about people, places or points of interest along the route. Examples include the Roman Fortress in York, Beningbrough Hall, York University's Cycle the Solar System scale model (see sidebar), the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and Castle Howard.
Green boxes are for wildlife that lives in the area you're passing through - for example, damselflies by the pond at Rawcliffe Meadows, songbirds along the Solar System Greenway, roe deer at Askham Bog, and kingfishers at Howsham Mill.
The book is packed with images, to give a flavour of the countryside you ride through and - I hope - motivate you to get out and explore it. The Yorkshire depicted in the book is almost always sunny.
Total page count: 238 pages.

Here's a list of the rides in Bike Rides In and Around York.
Cycle the Solar System is York University's scale model of the Sun, the planets, and the Cassini and Voyager spacecraft.
It's spread over 6.4 miles, which means that - as you've probably worked out already - the scale is 575,872,239 : 1. Every 100 metres you travel represents 57 million kilometres in space.
After the sun, the order of the planets is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (now a dwarf planet). To remember the order, use the phrase My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets.
York University has lots of information about Cycle the Solar System - https://astrocampus.york.ac.uk/cycle-the-solar-system/.
