Islington is forging ahead with plans to create more Liveable Neighbourhoods (LNs), reports the BBC.

It is to create six more LNs, which are the same as Low-Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs), in addition to the seven already in place. That will mean that in total 70% of its roads are covered by these schemes.

There will be a consultation in April.

As well as traffic restrictions there will be:

  • more green spaces
  • wider footways
  • cycle parking
  • placemaking features

Around twelve opponents of these schemes attended the council meeting on 12th January 2023. One said they want to be able to vote on the issue – but the council leader said the policies were included in last year’s election manifesto.

Meanwhile in south Birmingham, LTNs in Moseley and Kings Heath are to be made permanent as part of Birmingham City Council’s commitment to reallocating road space to active travel.

The second phase of the LTN measures, Places for People, will include new modal filters, one-way streets, a bus gate, and 20mph and traffic-calming measures. The cost is £2.56 million.

Labour Councillor Lisa Trickett said:

‘I’m really pleased with the proposals. We have been working very hard to get this across the line, especially with some of the bullying we as Councillors have faced.’

‘This measure will be good for our young people of Birmingham and the climate emergency we have declared.’
