Cycling in Yorkshire
This is an 8-mile mountain bike ride from Poppleton along the right bank of the river Ouse.
It takes you north west up the Ouse to its confluence with the river Nidd opposite Beningbrough Hall, then back via Moor Monkton on farm tracks of variable quality.
The above map gives an overview of the Right Bank of the Ouse route.
GPS files for this route are available on Plotaroute.
If you're driving to the start, there are a few car parking spaces right where the bridleway starts, just off Main Street Poppleton.
Follow the bridleway, and after a very short distance you reach the right bank (based on the way the water flows) of the river Ouse.
A firm mud path takes you upstream (main photo at the top of the page). You could see house martins and swallows over the river in Summer, and kingfishers at any time of year.
After a couple of kilometres, you come to a wooden bridge over a stream or drain called The Foss (not York's main river Foss), near the point where it flows into the Ouse.
Carry on up the Ouse. Beningbrough village is on the far bank, then a little further on you reach the confluence of the Ouse and the Nidd.
Here, Beningbrough Hall is on the other side of the Ouse, and the village of Nun Monkton is on the far bank of the Nidd.
Now follow the bridleway round to Moor Monkton.
Immediately after Moor Monkton, the path runs along the edges of some fields, and is ill-defined and has a poor surface. Further on, there are farm tracks of better quality.
Roe deer and hares live in and around these fields.
The last stretch back to Poppleton is on the road - Scagglethorpe Lane, Parsons Lane, Broad Lane, Common Croft Lane, and Ouse Moor Lane.
When you reach Main Street, turn left to get back to the start point.
