Stage 2 Tour de France 2022: Route Notes

Stage 2 starts in the historic city of Roskilde.

Roskilde

Roskilde is the tenth largest city in Denmark, with a population of 52,000 (Wikipedia).

Roskilde was founded by Viking King Harald Bluetooth in the 980s. Mr Bluetooth is now more famous for his wireless data sharing technology, but Roskilde became the capital of Denmark in the C11th, and remained the country's principal city until 1443.

It is home to the Viking Ship Museum, which has the well-preserved remains of five ships.

Another attraction is the Gothic Cathedral, completed in 1275. It houses the tombs of 39 Danish monarchs.

Roskilde is well-known for its annual rock festival.

Leaving Roskilde, the peloton passes Lejre at 8.9km, known for its Viking kings' burial mounds

The Fjords & the Veddinge Bakker Hills

The riders head north west to Holbaek adn the fjords of Zealand (Sjaelland).

Holbaek is the Saint-Tropez of Denmark (!), the country's sunniest city. It's twinned with England's Saint-Tropez, Dorchester. Footballer Christian Poulsen is from Holbaek.

The race route continues towards the hills of Veddinge Bakker where there are three Category 4 climbs:

Dragsholm

The climbs won't hold any terrors for the peloton, but Dragsholm Castle might. It is one of the most haunted castles in Europe. Woooo! One of the resident ghosts is Lord Bothwell, Prince Consort of Scotland who ended his life in captivity at Dragsholm.

Kalundborg

Next the route is south west along the coast to the intermediate sprint at Kalundborg, with 126.9km ridden. Kalundborg is a major port with an oil refinery.

After Kalundborg there's 50km of pedalling south along the coast - very likely in crosswinds.

Great Belt Bridge

At Korsør, the peloton rides onto the third largest suspension bridge in the world, the Great Belt Bridge (Storebaelt Bridge). I think the 'third largest' accolade relates to the main span between pillars of 1,624m.

It has east and west sections, with Sprogø Island in the middle. The east bridge is 6.7km long; there's also an east tunnel. The west bridge takes trains and vehicles, and is 6.6km long. The bridges and tunnels were completed in the mid-1990s.

In total the Great Belt Bridge goes on for 17.5km, and the wind could play havoc with the race here.

The finish line is 3km after the end of the bridge, in Nyborg.

Stage 2 Tour de France 2022: the Favourites

Fabio Jakobsen

The favourites for Stage 2 of the Tour de France 2022 will be the sprinters who can stay in the front group until the end.

Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl usually ride well in crosswind conditions; maybe Fabio Jakobsen could win. If not, another of the team's riders could take the stage.

I thought Sam Bennett of Bora Hansgrohe was a possibility, but he has not been selected. Jakobsen will have strong competition from Wout van Aert, though, and probably from Jasper Philipsen.

Who do you think will win Stage 2?
