Van Aert Comes Good on Stage 21

Stage 21 of the Tour de France 2025 ended in a solo victory for Wout van Aert.
This was a different Paris finish from normal. The finale involved three laps of a Champs-Elysées circuit and three laps of a Champs-Elysées plus Montmartre plus circuit.
Montmartre includes a punchy climb to the Sacré Coeur. The first time up, the lead group was 27. The second time, it was down to six riders; they included Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar.
The other members of the group were Matteo Trentin, Davide Ballerini, Matteo Jorgenson and Matej Mohoric.
Pogacar led on the third time up the climb. His best chance of a win was to drop the others here, but he couldn’t do so. Instead, Wout van Aert powered past him and got a gap.
Then the Belgian extended his lead on the descent, and all he had to do was time trial his way to the line on the Champs-Elysées.
Pogacar wins the General Classification of this year’s Tour de France, so this was a good result – cycling doesn’t benefit from a monopoly where one rider wins everything.
