North Yorkshire Council (NYC) has published its bid to the Mayor’s Active Travel Fund.

The Mayor’s Active Travel Fund is a £4 million pot set up by Mayor David Skaith. There is a single round of bidding, with delivery of schemes between June 2026 and January 2028.

£2.4 million is reserved for councils and other public bodies. There is also a pot for community organisations, businesses and charities.

The NYC bid has four elements to it:

  • minor scheme package
  • Skipton accessibility package
  • ANPR School Street support and
  • Skipton canal towpath upgrade

Minor Scheme Package

The minor scheme package includes dropped kerbs and tactile paving – nothing ambitious or transformative.

NYC is also asking for money to complete the Green Hammerton Greenway.

Skipton Accessibility Package

Again, the Skipton accessibility package comprises items are very low ambition.

They may well be important and make a small difference but if they need doing, you wonder why the council isn’t doing them from its own transport funds.

ANPR School Street Support

This element of the bid is for Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras.

They will provide enforcement of timed restrictions that prevent motor vehicle use of School Streets at drop-off and pick-up times.

Skipton Canal Towpath Upgrade

With match-funding of £215,672 from NYC, the total cost of the projects is £1,496,954.
