Cycling Down 5.2% in Year to June 2023

Cycling traffic in England was down by 5.2% in the year to June 2023. That’s according to provisional figures published by the DfT.
Cycling is still up by 13.8% against a baseline from December 2013. The peak in cycling traffic came during the pandemic in March 2021.
The new statistics come from 160 Automatic Traffic Counters, which provide a nationally representative sample.
Road Traffic Estimates
The DfT also published provisional road traffic estimates for the year to June 2023. These figures show that:
- a total of 328 billion vehicle miles were driven during the year to June 2023
- that represents a 2.3% increase since June 2022
- vehicle miles driven are still 3.1% below the pre-pandemic level (December 2019)
The newly-published DfT figures should not be confused with the National Travel Survey statistics, which cover a period to the end of 2022.
