Bob Jungels of AG2R was in the day’s breakaway on Stage 9.

Wout van Aert was in the break too, apparently by accident – he just turned his pedals and found himself there. He took 20 green jersey competition points at the intermediate sprint.

Jungels attacked his breakaway companions on the Col de la Croix and only Simon Geschke went with him. Jungels lost the German on the descent.

Thibaut Pinot struck out after Jungels. He closed the gap from 1min30 down to 25s or so at one stage. Pinot had the advantage on the steeper sections, but Jungels was better on the flat and the descents. In the end Pinot didn’t have quite enough to catch Jungels.

Jungels took a solo victory.

Castroviejo and Verona passed Pinot just before the finish. Pinot was fourth.

We didn’t see much of the bunch, but Pogacar did a sprint for the line, taking Vingegaard with him, but nicking 3s from Geraint Thomas and the others.
