Stage 13 TDF 2022 Blog: Not Quite Wright Again
Stage 13 turned out to be a breakaway day.
In the break were Stefan Kung, Filippo Ganna, Matteo Jorgensen, Hugo Houle, Fred Wright, Quinn Simmons, and Mads Pedersen.
The sprinters teams were interested in bringing the break back, but Fabio Jakobsen was suffering in the heat and Caleb Ewan crashed. Jumbo Visma were taking a “day off”. That left just Bike Exchange Jayco riding at the front of the bunch for Dylan Groenewegen, and it wasn’t enough.
Mads Pedersen, the King of Harrogate in 2019, attacked out of the break to drop Kung and Ganna. His teammate Simmons had already dropped away.
With just Houle and Wright left with him, Pedersen was the clear favourite. He started to sprint first, opened a gap, and crossed the line before Wright and Houle in that order.
