Hackney Moves Forward with Low Traffic Plans

A Greener Hackney
A Greener Hackney

Hackney is moving forward with its plans for less traffic and pollution, healthier travel, and new liveable neighbourhoods.

The proposals are set out in the London Borough’s Local Implementation Plan, which outlines transport projects for the 3 financial years up to March 2025. Those years are covered by Hackney’s latest funding agreement with Transport for London.

All the work is aimed at making it easier to get around on foot, by bike or by public transport.

3 Key Ambitions

The council’s plans are set out under these 3 key ambitions:

  • reducing traffic and pollution
  • helping everyone to travel healthily
  • creating liveable neighbourhoods, streets and estates

3 Years

The 3 financial years are 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25.

Some of the proposals for the different financial years include the following.

2022/23

  • reduce main road traffic
  • 4 new School Streets
  • replace the council’s diesel fleet with electric vehicles, bikes and e-bikes
  • walking, cycling, road safety or greening improvements on certain streets
  • community parklet programme
  • new 20mph speed limits on TfL roads in Hackney

2023/24

  • 100 more car club vehicles
  • improve London Fields and Hackney Downs LTNs
  • more walking, cycling, road safety or greening improvements
  • improving routes into Pembury Circus junction
  • 6 new School Streets
  • complete feasibility study on road user charging
  • publish a freight action plan
  • expand cargo bike share scheme
  • freight consolidation hubs

2024/25

  • 6 new School Streets
  • consult on LTNs in Cazenove and Stamford Hill
  • more than 500 new EV chargers

This is what leadership looks like. In North Yorkshire, the county council is happy to sign up to green goals, as in the Routemap to Carbon Negative, but has no intention of taking action to meet them.

Cllr Mete Coban

Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport Mete Coban said:

‘We are one of the greenest boroughs in the country – with more of us walking, cycling and taking public transport than almost any other area.’

These plans set out the next stage of our ambitions to reduce traffic and pollution; get everyone travelling healthily; and create liveable neighbourhoods that support this switch.’

‘Nearly all of Hackney will be low traffic; we’ll be developing options to support distance-based road user charging; there’ll be more bike and car sharing; we will create 4,000 new secure cycle parking spaces; every Hackney primary school will have a s School Street and we’ll be doing everything we can to build a greener, healthier Hackney.’
