Michael Woods was the fastest of the 14 breakaway riders up the Puy de Dome, and won his first Tour de France stage.

He had been left behind on the flat by some of his breakaway companions. Matteo Jorgenson was the first to ride away, knowing he needed to bank some time before the final climb.

Jorgenson was within 450m of the finish line when Woods came past, climbing at an altogether faster rate.

Jorgenson’s misery was complete when he was also passed by Pierre Latour and Matej Mohoric.

In the GC race, Pogacar attacked Vingegaard with 1.5km to go, and took 8s.
