Car traffic was up by 3% in 2023 as compared with 2022, according to the latest Road Traffic Statistics for the period up to the end of 2023.

The figures are based on manual counts at 46,025 points on the road network in Great Britain.

These are the numbers of billion miles travelled by different types of vehicle in 2023.

Van traffic was little changed compared with 2022. Lorries were down 2.5%.

Pedal cycles were down 7.3%. Cycling still represents nearly double the miles travelled by buses and coaches, and significantly more than motorcycle miles.

There are the traffic counts by region.

The South East had the most traffic in 2023, at 52.8 billion vehicle miles.

Yorkshire & the Humber had 27.9 billion vehicle miles. Traffic is increasing at a time when the York & North Yorkshire region’s Routemap to Carbon Negative says that it must decrease dramatically.

Road traffic in North Yorkshire was up from 2022, to 5.4 billion miles for all motor vehicles.

It is still below the 2019 pre-pandemic peak of 5.6 billion vehicle miles.
