National Travel Survey 2024

The National Travel Survey 2024 was published this Summer. It relates to England.
Cycling
The trend in cycling since 2002 is a small decline in trips and stages, but an increase in miles travelled – an average of 53 miles per person, and a total of 3.5 billion miles.
In 2024, cycling made up 2% of total trips and 1% of distance travelled.
What would encourage respondents to the survey to travel more?
- nothing (46%)
- safer roads (22%)
- off-road and segregated cycle paths (10%)
Leisure (41%) and commuting (31%) are the top two purposes of cycle trips.

The most trips and the furthest distance are travelled by men aged 40 to 49.

Cars

In 2024 household car ownership was:
- 22% no cars
- 44% one car
- 34% two or more cars
There are 12 cars for every 10 households in England.
As you might guess, richer households have more cars.

Trips and distance (as driver or passenger) have been in gradual decline since 2002.

Leisure and shopping remain the biggest purposes of car trips.
