On Top of the World (or the Plateau de Solaison at Least) on Stage 15

Remco Evenepoel was on top of the world today after beating Pogacar to a win on the Plateau de Solaison.

Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the race. He had been subject to a doping control at 2am, which may not have helped; the crash came as the bunch negotiated a roundabout and some road furniture.

There was a break of 24 riders, including Quinn Simmons and Tom Pidcock. Simmons crested the Saleve climb ahead of the Yorkshireman. Their order was reversed on the Cote du Mont.

Pogacar, del Toro and Evenepoel passed Simmons on the climb of the Solaison. Pogacar paced del Toro up the hill, which may have been overplaying his hand.

Del Toro tried to sprint for the line, but Remco came round him and held off Pogacar; or Pogacar didn’t need to win and was content not to lose time.
