Stage 7 TDF 2023 Blog: Cav 2nd, Philipsen Wins Again

Mark Cavendish came very close to Tour de France win no. 35 today, but Jasper Philipsen won again.
Mathieu van der Poel started a lead-out for Philipsen early, and it led to a pause in the push for the line. Cavendish took advantage, sprinting down the right hand side of the road, but Philipsen could get on his wheel and still had time to overtake him before the line.
Cavendish explained afterwards that he had had a problem with his gears, the chain jumping from the eleventh sprocket to the twelfth, then back to the eleventh again.

The Break
Simon Gugliemi was the lone breakaway artist early in the race.
He was replaced out front by Nans Peters and Pierre Latour, with Latour in particular driving the pace. The pair prompted the peloton to speed up, and they were caught well before Bordeaux.
