Jonas Vingegaard hopes to be fit to take part in the 2024 Tour de France.

That’s according to Team Visma Lease-a-Bike’s Sporting Director, Merijn Zeeman, quoted on the Wielerflits website.

Vingegaard has had to miss out on the team’s altitude camp in Sierra-Nevada starting this weekend, and will not take part in the Dauphiné, which begins on 2nd June 2024.

The Danish Tour de France champion crashed in April during the Tour of the Basque Country, breaking his collarbone and several ribs, as well as suffering a collapsed lung. He left hospital on 16th April 2024.

Zeeman said:

‘Reaching the Tour in good form will be difficult for Jonas, but it certainly isn’t impossible.

He is busy every day with his recovery under the guidance of our medical staff and physiotherapists. We are keeping open the possibility that he will be on the start line of the Tour in Florence.

Jonas is extremely talented and we also know that he recovers very quickly’.

Zeeman added that the team is following Vingegaard’s rehabilitation closely, but the medical team can’t yet say much about when he will be able to race again.

The Dauphiné is certainly too early, though.

‘The Dauphiné isn’t necessary per se for him to be ready for the Tour.

It is a key race in the build-up to the Tour. In 2021, Jonas rode the Dauphiné when he was also recovering from an injury. Only on the last stage did he show good form, and managed second place.

I’m convinced that with a good training block in that period Jonas can work on his form so as to be ready for the Tour’.

Update 8th May 2024

Yesterday Team Visma Lease-a-Bike posted a video of Vingegaard riding a road bike outside for the first time since his April crash.

He said:

‘I feel good. It’s improving day by day and I still have some things to recover from, but it’s going better and better.

Of course I hope to be there at the start of the Tour de France. We don’t know exactly how my shape and how my recovery will go, but I will do everything I can to get there in my top shape’.
