Crashes and a Sprint Finish in Turin

After an exciting weekend, this was a calmer day. Stage 3 was largely flat, and there wasn’t even a breakaway until 60km to go.
The stage culminated in a sprint in Turin. Biniam Girmay (Intermarché) won, beating Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud de Lie into second and third place.
Video Highlights
Video highlights of Stage 3.
Breakaway
The breakaway artist today was Fabien Grellier (Total).
He left the bunch with 60km to go, but his lead was never more than a minute, and he was caught again with 29km left.
He gets the combativité prize.
Cote de Barbaresco
Matteo Sobrero (Red Bull Bora) was first to the top of the Category 4 Cote de Barbaresco because he is from the neighbouring town of Alba.
Either he wanted to win that climb or the bunch let him, or a bit of both. He gets one mountains point, which will be of little use to him, but it’s a nice little detail.
Crashes
Mathieu van der Poel crashed or had a problem with 6km to go.
There was another crash with 2km to go. Jasper Phlipsen and Mark Cavendish were among the riders held up, and did not contest the sprint.
Yellow Jersey
The yellow jersey went to Richard Carapaz (EF).
Several riders are tied on time, including Pogacar, Evenepoel and Vingegaard as well as the Ecuardorian EF rider. The yellow jersey is allocated on the basis of cumulative placings at the stage finishes.
Carapaz came over the line several places before the previous yellow jersey, Pogacar, and his cumulative placings on the three stages so far are superior to the Slovenian’s. That’s why he is the new race leader.
