Richard Carapaz has been ruled out of the 2025 Tour de France with a gastrointestinal infection, picked up while he was training at home in Ecuador according to a report in the Guardian.

His EF Education EasyPost team said:

‘Last week he began experiencing abdominal pain and a high fever. Doctors have advised against long-haul travel and competition at this time.

As a result, Richard will not take part in this year’s Tour de France’.

In the 2024 Tour de France, Carapaz won the King of the Mountains competition. This year, he finished third in the Giro d’Italia.

The Ecuadorian was intending to go for stage wins in this year’s Tour, and would have been team leader.

Now he will switch his focus to the Vuelta a Espana which starts on 23rd August, where he will try to win the General Classification.
