Stage 3 was a run to Dunkerque, with Alpecin Deceuninck’s Jasper Philipsen the favourite.

Unfortunately there was trouble for Philipsen at the intermediate sprint. A little movement from Jonathan Milan sent Bryan Coquard right into Laurenz Rex; Coquard then rebounded to the left and into Philipsen, who fell and appeared to have broken his collarbone.

Philipsen had to abandon the race.

Tim Wellens took the one mountain point available at Mont Cassel. That means he replaces his teammate Pogacar in the polka dot jersey, and saves the Slovenian media duties at the end of the stage.

There was another crash with around 3km to go, Groenewegen appearing to be the cause of at least part of it with a sudden sideways movement.

The sprint for the line was close, with Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step just pipping Jonathan Milan (Lidl Trek). Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain Victorious was third.
