Linking Headingley to Leeds City Centre

Leeds City Council has coherent plans to link Headingley to the city centre.
In 2023, I looked at provision on the A660 Otley Road.

At that time, the section furthest from the city centre had been done, with a mix of infrastructure types.

The second section (Shaw Lane to St Mark’s Road) had just got under way.
The big problem was that provision ground to a halt after the junction with St Mark’s Road. Now there are projects that will remedy that, and provide a link to the city centre.
Leeds City Links

The first of these projects is Leeds City Links, which is in construction now.
It will create a sort of orbital route around the city centre, and includes cycle tracks on Great George Street and Merrion Street.
The remaining severance then will be the bit in between – St Mark’s Road to the city centre – but that will also be tackled as Woodhouse Lane Gateway.
Woodhouse Lane Gateway

There are brilliant plans for St Mark’s Road to the city centre – the problem bit where Woodhouse Lane splits into two.
There will be a bi-directional cycle track, shown in light blue in the image below, all the way from the St Mark’s Road junction to the city centre and Leeds City Links infrastructure.

The infrastructure north of west of St Mark’s Road will also be improved, with cycle tracks either side of the road.

The funding for Woodhouse Lane Gateway is from the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement, and work is scheduled for Spring 2026.
Lawnswood Roundabout
At the north west end of the route is the Lawnswood Roundabout, on the A6120 Outer Ring Road.
Work to signalise it and add pedestrian and cycle facilities started in August 2025.
