Food and Drink to Accompany Stage 16 Tour de France 2026

Apremont, vin de Savoie
Vin de Savoie, Apremont

Stage 16 is in Haute Savoie, and therefore this race should be accompanied by Savoyarde specialities. These include fondue, raclette and pierrade.

Vin de Savoie is usually drunk with a traditional Savoyarde meal.

Savoie wines are generally quite light with relatively high acidity. The reds are often made from Gamay grapes, and the whites from Chasselas, Altesse, Chardonnay, Roussanne or other varieties.

Apremont is one of the areas that makes vin de Savoie, generally white wine. The soil is chalky, the result of a landslide from Mont Granier in the 1200s. The slopes enable the vines to catch the morning sun. The main grape variety for Apremont is Jacquère, and the resulting wines are light and dry with floral, mineral character.

Another Savoie wine is Roussette. Buy a bottle of Roussette de Savoie (affiliate link).

Stage 16 Tour de France 2026: Route Notes

The stage starts in Evian-les-Bains.

Evian-les-Bains

The Stage 16 start town is Evian-les-Bains.

It is an upmarket holiday resort and spa town on the shore of Lac Léman.

There was interest in spring waters in the time of the First Empire, under Napoléon Bonaparte, and a port and a road to Evian were built in 1809.

The Evian mineral water company was launched in 1823, and the Cachat mineral water company in 1859.

By the late 1800s, there were twenty hotels, lots of villas, and a theatre and casino in Evian.

The town's popularity continued after World War I.

Today Evian is still a mineral water and holiday town. Many residents commute to work in Lausanne.

The riders set off from Avenue d'Abondance, near the embarkation point for boats across the lake.

The climbing starts straight away. The avenue leads up to Neuvecelle, where the riders pick up Avenue de Milly/Route de la Corniche.

They continue on Avenue to Gavot to Darbon and Champanges.

On the Route du Val d'Abondance and Route du Montet, they climb to Larringes.

According to the stage profile, the Côte de Larringes is 9.7km at 4.3%.

From Larringes, the road descends via Féternes to Pont de la Douceur, a bridge over the Dranse river. That's the end of the main descent.

Skiing Made Easy

Skiing Made Easy
Skiing Made Easy

Skiing Made Easy is a practical guide to learning to ski based on many happy seasons of ski teaching.

It takes you through the beginner's progression from snowplough to parallel turns, starting at the very beginning and not assuming any prior knowledge.

The book suggests relevant exercises to develop and improve your skills. Common faults are identified, along with the best ways to correct them.

'By the way' sections contain information about many of the little things that people assume you just know, but you may not.

'This is the book I wish I'd had when I started skiing' - reviewer on Amazon.

How to buy:

Skiing Made Easier

Skiing Made Easier

Skiing Made Easier is the follow-up to Skiing Made Easy, and picks up from where the first book left off.

The first chapter is Refining Your Parallel Turns.

The chapters on ski technique beyond basic parallel turns are Carving, Short Turns, Bumps and Off Piste.

There are then further chapters on Avalanche and Mountain Safety, Ski Psychology, Physical Preparation, Ski Servicing and Alpine Wildlife.

As in Skiing Made Easy, common faults are identified and exercises suggested to correct them and to develop your skills.

'By the way' passages contain bits of skiing knowhow that could otherwise take years to pick up.

Now the riders enter Thonon.

Stage 16 enters Thonon-les-Bains on the Avenue de la Dranse.

There's a sharp right turn on Avenue du Clos Banderet/Avenue des Prés Verts, then the course almost doubles back on itself on Avenue d'Evian/Avenue Jules Ferry.

The riders turn right on Avenue de Saint-François-de-Sales, goes through the Ville Haute, and continues on Rue Vallon/Avenue de Corzent.

A hairpin bend leads to Avenue du Général Leclerc, and the route passes the Château de Rives and the Port de Plaisance.

Stage 16 continues on the Quai de Ripaille, then finishes in front of the Château de Ripaille.

Thonon-les-Bains

Thonon-les-Bains is a town of 35,000 people, and part of the Swiss-French cross-border agglomeration known as Grand Genève (Wikipedia).

It was the capital of the Savoyard province of Chablais (hence the Chablais wines in Aigle). With the rest of the Duchy of Savoy, it became part of France in 1860 under Napoléon III.

The Port de Rives (pictured above) is the main marina, and has a museum dedicated to fishing and Lac Léman.

Thonon is built on quite a steep hill, and has a funicular railway to link the Port de Rives with the ville haute.
