Stage 5 of the Tour de France 2025 is a 33km individual time trial starting and finishing in Caen.

Christian Prudhomme says that most of the course will be on wide, flat roads, so this should be one for the rouleurs and time trial specialists, not the climbers.

Remco Evenepoel will hope he can pull off a stage victory.

Caen stands on the river Orne and is the capital of the Calvados département. The population is around 105,000.

Ferries ply the waters of the English Channel between Caen and Portsmouth.

History

Caen was called Catumagos in Roman times, meaning battlefield. It only became a significant place under the Dukes of Normandy, from the 900s onwards.

William the Conqueror began the construction of the Château de Caen. His wife Matilda of Flanders founded the Abbey of Sainte-Trinité here.

Caen became part of France in 1204.

During the Hundred Years War it was taken by the English King Edward III in 1346, and again by Henry V in 1417. The French regained it in 1450.

The Germans captured Caen in 1940. After the Normandy landings in June 1944, Allied forces advanced through France (Operation Overlord).

The Battle of Caen took place from 6th June to 19th July 1944, and it inflicted a lot of damage on the city. Reconstruction continued until 1962.

Sights

The Château de Caen is a very large Medieval fortress. It houses the Fine Arts Museum of Caen and the Museum of Normandy.

There are churches which belonged to Abbeys built by William the Conqueror, and a historic botanical garden.

Other Facts

The University of Caen has 34,000 students.

The man who introduced waste containers to France, Eugène Poubelle, was from Caen.

The last time Caen hosted the Tour de France was on Stage 5 of the 2006 edition.

William the Conqueror in Caen

William the Conqueror was born in Falaise, south of Caen. He was a descendant of the Viking Rollo, who was an invader from Scandinavia. Rollo reached an agreement with the King of France to become Duke of Normandy in 911. William was an illegitimate son of Robert I of Normandy.

William was Duke of Normandy from 1035, when he was only 7 or 8 years old, and Caen was his capital. He married Matilda of Flanders in the 1050s. Caen Castle was built for him around 1060.

Of course William became King of England in 1066, but he then came back to Normandy.

William held major assemblies at Caen Castle. When he died in 1087, he was buried at the Abbey of Saint-Etienne in Caen. His successors as King of England and Duke of Normandy continued to use the castle at Caen.

Only in 1204 did Philip II of France recapture Caen.

The Battle for Caen

The Battle for Caen started on D-Day, 6th June 1944. It was part of the wider Battle of Normandy, known as Operation Overlord.

The British objective was to capture the city straight away, but that wasn't possible. British and Canadian forces edged closer by intense fighting in July 1944.

Caen itself was subject to heavy Allied bombardment, which destroyed much of the city and killed around 3,000 civilians.

In the end, the ruins of Caen were captured by the Allies on 19th July 1944, after six weeks of trying and the loss of 30,000 British and Canadian soldiers.
